We had loaded up all the equipment and had begun our journey to New Bedford, Massachusetts. Grant and Jay were in the TAPS van in front of us, while Steve drove the second van with Brian, Tango and I. Brian was in the passenger's seat, and Tango and I were in the backseat.
"So, you wrestle for a living, huh?" Tango said.
"Yup."
"How'd you get into that?"
"Family business. I'm a fourth generation McMahon in the wrestling business. Genetics, I guess." Brian chimed in.
"Is your dad as over the top as he is on TV?"
"At home, he's just my dad." I said simply, not looking away from Tango and his deep chocolate eyes. He fixated on something I was wearing, more than likely my necklace. He reached out slowly and touched the ring that hung on a chain around my neck. He turned it up delicately.
"Whoa
is that real?"
"A real Super Bowl ring? Yes."
"Wow, how'd you score one of those?"
"I work with the team, an assistant coach,"
"Whoa, really?" Steve asked.
"Yup! Friends with everyone too."
"Cool!" Brian said, turning and looking back at me. I nodded to him. After he turned back to the front, I rolled my eyes at Tango and we both shared a silent laugh. The walkie talkie on the center console buzzed to life.
"Steve?" Jason's voice asked. Steve picked up the walkie talkie.
"Yeah, Jason?"
"How's our guest investigator?"
"She's fine, been flirting with Tango ever since she met him!" I blushed, mortified and hid my face in my hands. I heard Grant and Jason laugh over the walkie talkie. Tango put his hand on my shoulder and his touch was nice. I let my hands down from my face.
"So, you guys are playing nice?" Jason continued, still somewhat laughing. Steve looked back at me, I nodded.
"She thinks so,"
"Well, then let her talk!" Jason said. Steve handed the radio to Brian who handed it back to me.
"Yes?" I said. That caused Jason and Grant to laugh again.
"You like these clowns?" Grant asked.
"Oh yes, been regaling them with what I do for a living and the fact that I have a real New England Patriots Super Bowl ring hanging around my neck." Grant chuckled again.
"Awesome. You'll have to show that to me once we get to the location."
"Will do, boss." He gave a rousing laugh to that. Jason came back on then.
"Don't tell him that kind of stuff; now give the radio back to Steve. Tango, talk some sense into her. I'm the boss!" he laughed. I handed the radio to Brian, who handed it back to Steve.
"She forgot to tell you that she's hungry and thinks we should stop at Red Robin for something to eat," Steve said. We all cracked up in the background. I took Brian's radio off the center console.
"That's true," I chimed in. Brian reached back. Steve held his radio in the on position so Jason and Grant could hear us.
"Give me back my radio!" Brian said, trying to get the radio from me.
"Make me," I giggled. We pulled into the parking lot of a Red Robin, and both TAPS vehicles parked next to each other. Brian got out and opened the back door.
"Okay, gimme the radio, please." I jumped out and tucked it like a football. I pushed past Brian and went behind Grant.
"What are you guys doing?" Jason asked, obviously being entertained.
"Playing keep away!" I answered, weaving between Grant and Jason, Brian following me. Grant, Jason, Steve and Tango were all cracking up as I ran circles around Brian. "It's all in the feet!" I coached him. "Make sharp, clean cuts on your route and you'll beat the defender every time!" I continued my football lecture as I continued to stay about three steps ahead of poor Brian. I got back to Tango again, and I felt my knee overextend and it shocked my leg and I stumbled and stopped. I knelt to the ground on my good leg and stretched it out to stop the charley horse. Brian caught up to me and I tossed him the radio. "Game over." I said. Tango knelt in front of me and put one of his hands on my left leg that I had stretched out in front of me.
"You okay? What happened?"
"It's nothing, just some cramping." The pain eased within a few minutes, and in that few minutes, the TAPS team had formed a circle around me. Tango helped me stand up.
"You alright?" Brian asked quietly.
"Yeah, it was just a charley horse, no big deal." I waved everyone away and they started for the restaurant. I followed at the very back, slowly, carefully stepping on my weakened knee. After a couple minutes, Tango stopped and turned to look behind him. He walked back to me. He opened his mouth to say something. "It's nothing, after a spasm, the muscle is in a weakened state and can't support all the weight at once." He ignored my 'medical' rationale and pulled my left arm over his shoulder and helped support my weight and we soon reached the rest of the group waiting at the door for us. Brian looked at me for a long moment, then looked at Tango, who just opened the door and made sure I got through the doorway under my power before following me in. The rest of the group followed behind, and the hostess looked up.
"Table for 6?" she asked me.
"Yes, please," I replied, smiling. She led us to a large booth.
"Is this good?"
"Yes, this is perfect," I said, sliding in and to the middle. Tango slid in after me, and Steve slid in on the other side of me. Brian sat beside Steve, Grant by Tango and Jason slid in last on Grant's other side. We all began to examine our menus, and I noticed Tango slide his arm onto the seat behind me. I flushed a little and crossed my legs under the table. I accidentally kicked Steve. He looked at me, and I mouthed 'Sorry,' still blushing. He looked behind me and saw Tango's arm and nodded. He leaned over and whispered in my ear.
"Scoot a little closer to him," I gave him a wide eyed look and he nodded again. I sighed and scooted a little closer to Tango, so that we were slightly touching. He looked at me, then slid his arm down to around me loosely. A waitress came and got our drink orders, all the guys got coffee and I got a Coke.
"So, let's see this Super Bowl ring," Grant said. I smiled and nodded. I reached up and unhooked the chain from around my neck and handed it to him.
"That was the first one we won, the only one I can comfortably wear, the others are too big," Grant handed it to Jason. Jason whistled, turning it in the light before handing it back to Grant, who handed it to Tango, who passed it to Steve. Steve looked at it for a minute.
"Didn't you date the quarterback then?" Brian asked, gesturing to the ring. I blushed furiously.
"What are you, my stalker?"
"You were on the front page of the Boston Globe, kissin' the guy!"
"How'd you even know that was me? I wasn't identified in that photo,"
"I did a little research. I checked out your wwe.com profile." I rolled my eyes.
"He kissed me that day; we had just won the Super Bowl! And yes, I dated him. Can we move on, please?"
"Are you dating anyone now?" he continued.
"No, I'm not," I said, blushing again. Steve handed the ring back to me.
"Can I see it?" Brian asked.
"No." I said, sliding it back on the chain.
"Please?"
"No, you either get to be annoying to me, or you get to be nice. You picked annoying." I slid the chain around my neck again. I was suddenly acutely aware of Tango's arm around my waist as he shot a glare at Brian. The waitress came with coffee and my Coke, and the situation eased a bit. I took a sip of my Coke, and I again was aware of Tango's arm around my waist, his hold was becoming more confident. That made me smile.
"So, are you scared at all of what you may or may not experience tonight?" Jason asked, taking a drink of coffee.
"No. I don't find fear of spirits or ghosts or paranormal things, I mean, all paranormal is, is outside of normal, and that's what scares people." Jason and Grant nodded. The waitress came back and took our orders, and we went back to making conversation to pass the time.
"Why do you think I'm annoying?" Brian asked. I stared at him.
"Seriously?" I said, incredulous.
"Seriously," he said. "What am I doing that is annoying to you? I'm just asking questions," Jason pinched the bridge of his nose, I just shook my head.
"I need a breather," I said, then slid under the table and appeared on the other side in a flash. I took off out the door and leaned against the side of the restaurant. I heard the door open a few minutes later. Tango leaned against the wall beside me.
"You okay?" He asked as he looked over at me.
"Yeah," I replied. He put a hand on my shoulder.
"He doesn't mean to be annoying, that's just how he is sometimes,"
"I know, but I also get easily frustrated and have a hot button temper, so it's best I leave before I blow up." Tango laughed.
"That could be a good experience for him," he nodded, thinking. That made me chuckle.
"Maybe," I agreed. I turned and gave Tango a hug. He embraced me in return and held me close. I rested my head on his shoulder and sighed softly. He brushed my hair lightly, then let his hand rest on the back of my neck. He smelled good, masculine, but not too much. "Thanks, Tango," I said, pulling away a little and kissing him on the cheek before dropping my arms and pulling back. "We should get back," I said and headed for the door. Tango looked a little wide eyed, then smiled and followed half a step behind me.
